I had a meeting with a year 11 student who loved football, but was quite realistic in saying that he knew he wasn’t going to be a pro player.
BUT he likes business, enjoyed his PE teaching work experience and would like to work for a football club in some capacity.
We drew a stadium in the middle of our white board. Around the outside, we thought of all the jobs that were involved in a football club; Coaches, dietitians, grounds people, manager, community officers, referees, commentator etc etc - you get it.
We wiped off all the jobs he wasn’t interested in. We talked through the jobs that were left.
We swiped off the ones he didn’t like the pathway options for (I.e. they required him to study a science at A Level to get into a degree level course and he doesn’t want to study science etc).
This left us with 4-5 options. We worked backwards from these, discussing what post 16 options might leave the door open to a number of these options.
We looked at local football, business and sport based degree courses. None of them required particular level 3 subjects so this left our options open. He liked the idea of BTec rather than A Level so we looked at local providers for Business and Sport BTec courses.
His action plan now consists of going to open evenings for the FE places he is interested in.
We will meet again after the open evenings to review the options together and I will support him with his applications if he needs it, although I believe he has this support from home.
The power of a white board and a badly drawn football stadium!
